Meet Darren Thurston: from England to South Africa to Norway, one step at a time

Darren Thurston, Spectra’s compliance officer, was born in England, raised in South Africa and settled in Norway. He has also walked remote deserts, collected good stories and learned that one book can change the course of a life.

Darren Thurston’s story starts in Chatham, England, but most of his childhood played out in South Africa. He returned to England for his education and later put down roots in Norway, where he became a father. Today he is married with three children, and his parents and one brother are still part of the picture. “What a journey it’s been,” he says.

The book that changed everything

Ask Darren about his favorite book and you get more than a title. Years ago, while working a summer job selling encyclopedias door to door in Australia, he was reading The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart, a novel about a man who lets a roll of the dice make his decisions. Darren decided to put the book’s theory into practice on the job, which led to him leaving the company. “Later that day I met a Norwegian woman who became my wife,” he recalls.

Building quality into the work

Darren started consulting for Spectra around 2011 and joined officially about 10 years ago. As compliance officer, he builds and matures management systems under ISO 9001, AS9100 and ISO 27001 across hardware and software environments. His more than 20 years of experience sit mostly in aerospace and defense, supporting international prime programs in Europe and North America. That work has included an RMA rate below 2% and quality oversight through two acquisitions.

What he likes most about the job is the people: clever colleagues with a sense of humor. His favorite memory is earning the team’s first certification. “It validated the work we had done,” he says.

He credits much of his path to the teachers who pushed him.

“There was always one teacher in every school who encouraged me to go further,” he says. “I wish I could thank them.” The best advice he has received is just as simple: “When you’re unsure about something, consult your 80-year-old self. The answer usually becomes obvious.” Looking back, he is most thankful for “the opportunities I’ve been given, and taken, over the years.”

One step at a time

Darren’s favorite hobby is walking, and he means it. He rarely vacations in the same place twice and is drawn to remote places and deserts. Between 2023 and 2026 he took part in several international endurance expeditions:

  • A 10-day crossing of Sudan’s Bayuda Desert
  • Driving a tuk-tuk 1,243 miles (2,000 km) from Mumbai to Chennai, India
  • A 10-day jungle trek through the Darién Gap region of Panama
  • A 60-mile (96 km) jungle and mountain trek in Papua New Guinea
  • A seven-day desert expedition in Algeria’s Tassili n’Ajjer National Park

Next on his list is Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, which he says “looks magical” and would make a challenging walk, along with more of Southeast Asia. When a hike isn’t possible, he is just as happy “lounging around doing absolutely nothing.”

His favorite movie, Lost in Translation, reflects the same curiosity.

“It’s about people and places,” he says, and those are what he most likes to learn about. “We are more similar than we think.”

At home, two cats keep things lively: Skatt, a Bengal who is always out and about causing trouble, and Snoopy, a half Bengal who prefers to stay home and be around people. And if you run into Darren, ask him about his handkerchief trick.
